The Courtship of Helen and Bill

In 1942, Bill was a cadet in the Army Air Corps, and his Aunt Nina arranged a party on the first of August for cadets, but Bill was the only one who showed up.  He picked me out over five other women.

We left the party and went to my home and sat on the porch and talked till 5:00 a.m.  He asked me to marry him and gave me a ring he had.

The next week he brought me an engagement ring. He was immediately sent to Albuquerque for bombardier training.

My mother and I went down to see Bill in New Mexico on October 2, 1942, and we were married on October 3.

He called me the morning of our wedding day and said he had overslept and could I meet him downtown to get the license and buy my own wedding ring. I am still wearing that five-dollar ring, even though I have a new set.

Mother wanted to know if I wanted her to wait for him with me--I said no because I was afraid I wouldn’t recognize him. I had only seen him  three times before I married him.
