On
February 9, 1861, The Confederate States of America was formed with Jefferson Davis as president.
On April 12, Confederates under General Pierre Beauregard
fired upon Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, marking the start of the Civil War.
William Edwin Judson, father of Everett Irving Judson, enlisted in the
Civil War on May 10, 1864, for three years, and was mustered into the service of the United States on June 18, 1864, at Camp
Butler. Sgt. Judson was honorably discharged at Camp Fry, Chicago, on October 26, 1864, after only four months.
In May, 1965, the last of the Confederate forces surrendered.
Over 620,000 Americans died in the war.
