Warren and I are living in the same house we bought 42 years ago, and I expect we’ll never move!
We are in the process of fixing it up, though. We are fortunate that our boys and their families do not live far
from us. Mike and Chari and children Jake (9) and Alyssa (6) live in Redlands, not far from us. Gary and Shay and children
Hailey (8) and Kyle (6) live in San Clemente, where Gary has taken up surfing! Jim (unmarried) lives with Gary and family.
Uncle Jim makes a good occasional babysitter! Warren and I joined a church almost 3 years ago, and our lives have changed in amazing ways—for
the better! We hadn’t even attended church since the mid-seventies, so this has been big in our lives. Mike and family
belong to the same church; in fact, they introduced us to it. We found out that church isn’t like it used to be! Warren
sings on the praise team (no choir), and Mike plays bass guitar with the praise band. We never would have predicted this!
Anyhow, through the church, we have become involved with a group that takes food to orphanages and missions in Mexico one
Saturday every month. I got roped into being the "loadmaster" for the group, something no one else wanted to do! That means
I get to plan how much of each kind of food is taken and which truck takes what. It’s challenging and sometimes frustrating,
but very worthwhile. It has opened up new worlds for us!
Since we retired in 2000, we started driving to Illinois every
spring to visit Mom and Leslie and Ron. We try to take different routes each time and have seen quite a lot of the country
between California and Illinois! Special highlights of our trips have been the friends and family we have visited along the
way, including a group of Arnetts in Kansas that we had not known previously.
We still like to ride horses and usually participate in two
3-day horse drives in eastern Arizona each year. In the summer, we ride in Wyoming. We also work in Wyoming for the outfitter
we ride with, both at his summer camp on a lake and at his hunting camp in the fall. I cook, and Warren is the campjack--he
does whatever else needs to be done. It has been hard work at times, but a lot of fun, too, and we have met some great people
from all over the country!
We’re enjoying being retired, even though it sometimes
seems we are just as busy, if not busier, than when we had paying jobs! -- Judy
